Tikkun Leyl Shavuot @ the JCA
Tuesday, June 11th, 7-11pm
Join us for Tikkun Leyl Shavuot - three sessions of learning interspersed with davenning and potluck dairy dessert buffet!
Session One:
Power Dynamics, Consent, and Tools for Self Awareness
Hazzan Diana Brewer
Was the receiving of Torah consensual? How do the dynamics of asymmetrical relationships affect consent? How can we better understand the effect of our presence and gain insight into our deep and subtle motives as we move through the world?
It turns out that the rabbis of the Talmud were also pondering such questions. We will explore a Talmudic text that examines the giving of Torah at Sinai, as well as practices for self awareness built into Jewish tradition through a profound teaching of Rabbi Zalman Schachter- Shalomi.
Session Two:
Jews and indigenousness: a conundrum with a solution
Rabbi David Seidenberg
Even though Judaism's cycles and rituals are deeply keyed to the land and ecology of Canaan/Israel/Palestine, the Torah insists that the Israelites are not “indigenous” to Canaan. Why?
As we explore this question through Torah, history, and archaeology, we will also unlock how the rhetoric of “indigenousness” can become a foundation for coexistence today, instead of a battering ram against the "other side." Can Judaism's “indigenous” core help us rise above the damaging politics and searing pain of our time? The answer is yes!
Session Three:
TBD
Rabbi Benjamin Weiner
Rabbi Weiner promises to close the evening—for those still awake—with an interesting and insightful session, likely drawn from the Jewish storytelling and/or the Babylonian Talmud!
