Talmud Learning Series with Julia Spiegel
Wisdom or Prophecy: Where Does Interpretive Authority Come From Today?
Three Sundays from 11:30am - 1pm
May 5th, 12th, and 26th
Join The JCA for an immersive Talmud learning series. For those who are excited about deepening their relationship with Jewish text in the original language, craving a rigorous learning space to unpack Jewish tradition, or just curious about Talmud study.
The What:
We’ll be learning a sugya (Talmudic passage) that explores the question of how the source of authority transformed during the Talmudic period, and what that might have to teach us about the way that interpretation, access, and the seat of authority play out in our tradition today.
Our time together will include an orientation to Talmud and Talmud study in the “SVARA method,” chevruta (paired learning time), and shiur (shared class time).
This will be a mixed level learning space. Which means that everyone from beginners to experts are invited to dive in. Never learned Talmud before? What a great place to start! All you need to know is your aleph-bet to join. You should feel comfortable identifying Hebrew letters and sounding out Hebrew words with vowels.
The Where:
On Zoom!
The When:
11:30am - 1pm on Sunday May 5th, 12th, and 26th
The Who:
This class will be facilitated by Julia Spiegel, the JCA’s rabbinic intern. Julia, alongside having the joy of being the JCA’s rabbinic intern this year, is completing two years as a fellow in the SVARA Kollel, and this is her second practicum as a part of that kollel. Julia is passionate about teaching Talmud in the SVARA method, and really believes in the potential that learning Talmud has to help us foster a learning culture that prioritizes connection, creativity, trust, and joy.
